Seeing stars

We’ve finished a UFO!  We had completed the stars for our last pop-up shop but that was as far as we got before the pop-up shop popped!  We used a pattern from Moda’s Candy pattern book which is based on 2.5 inch squares and we combined some lovely French General with Moda Bella Solids .   It just needed the border added to finish the top.  We do seem to just ‘tweak’ patterns a little and this is no exception – we’ve added a small inner border to better frame our lovely stars.

We made our own 2.5 inch squares (which didn’t take long!) for the stars.  Making the points of the stars meant there were all these small triangles that were saying they needed to be sewn together.  Since they were already matched and ready to go, that’s exactly what we did!

We now have lots of these tiny squares (1.75 inches square) to use.  They would look good in the back of the quilt but we haven’t decided how to use them.  They’d look great in a cushion cover as well.  Decisions, decisions!
What would YOU do? – let us know!

Josephine goes to Southwold

We’ve just had a delivery of French General Josephine charm packs and jelly rolls and couldn’t resist whipping up a quick quilt top with a charm pack.  These packs are part of the Moda pre cut range and consist of 42  5 x 5 inch squares featuring the whole collection which is a great way to get a large range of fabrics without having to buy loads.  We just arranged them as they came out of the pack and put in a few larger squares for contrast and came up with this…

It’s so simple – it just means matching up a few seams and, because the squares are pre-cut, even this is pretty straight forward!  If you’d like to see Josephine in all her glory then come to our pop up shop at The Swan Hotel in Southwold, Suffolk this Friday 6th, Saturday 7th  and Sunday 8th December from 10.00am.  Friday is the turning on of the Christmas lights in Southwold so there’ll be lots to see and do but just remember the High Street will be closed from 5pm so best to get in early if you’re planning to visit the town on that day.

We’ll also have some more scrap bags (and we know how you love a scrap bag!) and a few other interesting bits and pieces so call in and see us for a chat and bring along anything you’ve made since we last saw you.  Valerie and John from Daisy May Quilting will be there with their quilt display – we can’t wait to see what they’ll have this time – so it should be a great few days.  Let’s just hope it doesn’t snow this time!

Spring House in Southwold

The Cygnet Room, Swan Hotel, Southwold

The Cygnet Room, Swan Hotel, Southwold

There have been 2 new fabric deliveries in the last week or so –

boho spring house

Boho by Urban Chiks for Moda – a collection of funky retro fabrics with bold designs in a variety of sizes.  We’ve chosen the blue/brown palette with a pop of red.

And Spring House by Stephanie Ryan also for Moda.  This is Stephanie’s debut line for Moda and is so clean and fresh and yes – Spring-like!  There are some great ideas of how to put this fabric to good use on Stephanie’s website.

We’ll have both these collections at our next pop up shop at The Swan Hotel in Southwold, Suffolk this weekend – Friday 24th to Sunday 26th May from 10.00am.  Valerie and John from Daisy May Quilting will be there with a quilt display to show off their fabulous long-arm quilting skills and of course our room will be one big Aladdin’s cave of fabric!

Also featuring at the pop up will be some new items that we’ve made since our last time at The Swan –

juggling summer casablanca

a cushion cover made with Zen Chic’s Juggling Summer and a quilt made with Casablanca from Benartex.

So if you need to match some fabric, have something you’ve made that you’d like to show us or just want a bit of a chat – come along and say hello!

Bundles of joy

We spent last weekend putting together a few new fat quarter bundles for the website starting with the most recent collections.

Then we added a few others …

February Fabric Sale

So it’s still cold and a bit bleak out there – or hotter than a shearer’s armpit depending on which part of the world you’re in!  Either way we thought it would be a great idea to brighten up everybody’s day and have a sale.  Our shelf space seems to be disappearing by the day and, as we’ve got some fab new fabrics on order, we thought what better way to clear a bit of room than to get you to help us out…

The collections are clockwise from top left, Floral Fancies, 30s Playtime, Blueberry Crumb Cake, Lilac Parade, Modern Edge and Westminster.

Each collection has between 5 and 10 fabrics so head on over to the website and have a closer look and don’t forget to keep an eye on it as we’ll be adding to the sale in the coming days.

Salt Air & Tomato Soup

Here’s the latest in our bag collection – a little seasidey number from Kwik Sew made with Salt Air by Cosmo Cricket for Moda and a coordinating Bella solid in Tomato Soup.

Quiksew bag

As you can see the fabric is perfect for the beach and holidays and has a lovely vintage feel – here’s hoping for an Indian Summer!

We’ve also teamed up the three Salt Air fabrics and the Pond and Snow Bella Solids for a lovely fresh and breezy bundle.  The Bella Solids are excellent quality plain cotton with a high thread count and are also very competitively priced so when they’re added to a bundle it keeps the overall cost down which can’t be bad!

Salt Air with Bella Solids

There’s no limit to what you can get up to with solids –  this simple quilt pattern by Angela Walters would look great in these Bella Solids.

The new bag will be at our pop up shop in Southwold along with all the fabric and the Kwiksew pattern so come along and check us out if you can.  To all of you setting up for the Festival of Quilts today and all of you heading that way over the weekend – have a great time!

Here comes summer!

Well waddaya know – summer has finally arrived in the UK – well parts of it anyway – so there’s only one thing for it and that’s to get some al fresco sewing done!

It’s only a month to go to our next pop up shop at The Swan Hotel in Southwold so we’ve been busy making a few smaller items to showcase some of our (quite summery!) fabric ranges.  We think it’s the best way to get a ‘feel’ for the fabrics.  Here’s a sneak peek…

Salt Air by Cosmo Cricket, Tradewinds by Lily Ashbury & Hello Luscious by Basicgrey

These are all Moda fabrics and if you need a bit of inspiration have a look at this website –  Moda Bake Shop.  It features lots of ‘recipes’ using Moda pre-cut fabric such as the Salt Air Diamonds Quilt  and these Tradewinds potholders so it’s a great way to see how the fabrics look made up, even if you don’t use the patterns.  An even better way would be to come along to the Swan Hotel on the August Bank Holiday weekend and see for yourselves!  We’ll keep you posted and, in the meantime, have you been doing any al fresco sewing?
