Surprises at The Swan

Our latest pop up shop at The Swan Hotel in Southwold was during the May Spring Bank Holiday weekend – mixed weather but lovely to see some regular customers as well as some passers-by, delighted when unexpectedly discovering our Aladdin’s cave of fabric in the Cygnet Room.  We were also delighted when two of our regular customers brought in quilts to show us – we always get excited when this happens!  You can see why:

Lindsey's Tilda quilt

Lindsey’s fab Tilda quilt was the inspiration for the Tilda rag quilt we made with our selection of Tilda fabrics.

Penny's Persimmon quilt

Penny’s lovely quilt used the Persimmon collection from Moda in an eye-catching pinwheel design.

Thanks to Lindsey and Penny for taking the time to show us their quilts.  Our next pop up is on the August Bank Holiday weekend at The Swan Hotel, Southwold, Suffolk so maybe you have something you’d like to bring along to show us?

Seeing stars

We’ve finished a UFO!  We had completed the stars for our last pop-up shop but that was as far as we got before the pop-up shop popped!  We used a pattern from Moda’s Candy pattern book which is based on 2.5 inch squares and we combined some lovely French General with Moda Bella Solids .   It just needed the border added to finish the top.  We do seem to just ‘tweak’ patterns a little and this is no exception – we’ve added a small inner border to better frame our lovely stars.
We made our own 2.5 inch squares (which didn’t take long!) for the stars.  Making the points of the stars meant there were all these small triangles that were saying they needed to be sewn together.  Since they were already matched and ready to go, that’s exactly what we did!
We now have lots of these tiny squares (1.75 inches square) to use.  They would look good in the back of the quilt but we haven’t decided how to use them.  They’d look great in a cushion cover as well.  Decisions, decisions!
What would YOU do? – let us know!

Popping up with Sally Holman in Southwold

Well it appears to be May already and, after a great Easter weekend in Southwold, it’s time for another pop-up!  Over the last couple of years that we’ve been popping up at The Swan Hotel, we’ve been lucky enough to see a steady increase in visitors and now it’s become a 4 day social gathering of lovely people who call in to see us and show us what they’ve been making (and to buy fabric of course- but that’s not compulsory!).  What a great way to spend a long weekend! We’ll have some new fabric – including this French General Le Bouquet Francais – and more scrap bags of course…

This weekend we’re delighted to have  expert quilter Sally Holman in residence.  She will be holding Make and Take classes of one hour which will involve creating a fabric landscape using a variety of techniques.  The cost is £6.00 including kit – a great way to spend a creative hour!  If you would like to book a place please email us or you can just turn up on the day.  Classes will be at the following times:

Sat 24th & Sun 25th May –
11.00am to 12 noon, 1.00 to 2.00pm, 3.30 to 4.30pm
Monday 26th May –
11.00am to 12 noon, 1.00 to 2.00pm, 3.00 to 4.00pm

and we’ll be there from Friday 23rd until Monday 26th May from 10.00am until 5.00pm (or later if we’re having fun!)

Come and say hello!

Josephine goes to Southwold

We’ve just had a delivery of French General Josephine charm packs and jelly rolls and couldn’t resist whipping up a quick quilt top with a charm pack.  These packs are part of the Moda pre cut range and consist of 42  5 x 5 inch squares featuring the whole collection which is a great way to get a large range of fabrics without having to buy loads.  We just arranged them as they came out of the pack and put in a few larger squares for contrast and came up with this…

It’s so simple – it just means matching up a few seams and, because the squares are pre-cut, even this is pretty straight forward!  If you’d like to see Josephine in all her glory then come to our pop up shop at The Swan Hotel in Southwold, Suffolk this Friday 6th, Saturday 7th  and Sunday 8th December from 10.00am.  Friday is the turning on of the Christmas lights in Southwold so there’ll be lots to see and do but just remember the High Street will be closed from 5pm so best to get in early if you’re planning to visit the town on that day.

We’ll also have some more scrap bags (and we know how you love a scrap bag!) and a few other interesting bits and pieces so call in and see us for a chat and bring along anything you’ve made since we last saw you.  Valerie and John from Daisy May Quilting will be there with their quilt display – we can’t wait to see what they’ll have this time – so it should be a great few days.  Let’s just hope it doesn’t snow this time!

Four days to go…

…and we’ll be back for another pop up shop at The Swan Hotel in Southwold, Suffolk so if you didn’t make it to The Festival of Quilts in Birmingham (or even if you did!) come and say hello and see some of our lovely new fabric.

This time we’ll be there for FOUR days (Friday 23rd to Monday 26th from 10.00am)  so there’s plenty of opportunity to drop in and have a chat.  Valerie and John from Daisy May Quilting will be downstairs with their quilt display and we’ll be upstairs with all our fabric and a few new items to show off.

Spring House in Southwold

The Cygnet Room, Swan Hotel, Southwold

The Cygnet Room, Swan Hotel, Southwold

There have been 2 new fabric deliveries in the last week or so –

boho spring house

Boho by Urban Chiks for Moda – a collection of funky retro fabrics with bold designs in a variety of sizes.  We’ve chosen the blue/brown palette with a pop of red.

And Spring House by Stephanie Ryan also for Moda.  This is Stephanie’s debut line for Moda and is so clean and fresh and yes – Spring-like!  There are some great ideas of how to put this fabric to good use on Stephanie’s website.

We’ll have both these collections at our next pop up shop at The Swan Hotel in Southwold, Suffolk this weekend – Friday 24th to Sunday 26th May from 10.00am.  Valerie and John from Daisy May Quilting will be there with a quilt display to show off their fabulous long-arm quilting skills and of course our room will be one big Aladdin’s cave of fabric!

Also featuring at the pop up will be some new items that we’ve made since our last time at The Swan –

juggling summer casablanca

a cushion cover made with Zen Chic’s Juggling Summer and a quilt made with Casablanca from Benartex.

So if you need to match some fabric, have something you’ve made that you’d like to show us or just want a bit of a chat – come along and say hello!
